AutoScreenRecorder

Screencasts

We've showed you how to take still photos of your computer with screenshots, but have you ever thought about taking a video of your computer screen? Sounds neat, right?! You've probably seen software developers create short videos of their applications to show the various features of a program, right? If so, you might be interested in creating your own screencast, which basically, is a video of what you see on your monitor. Screencasts can help you in remembering how to do something or you can use them to share certain ideas with your family and friends. Are you hooked yet? If you are, keep reading to learn how you can make your very own screencasts!

1.) There are hundreds of programs available today that allow you to create screencasts, but we're going to be using a program called AutoScreenRecorder. It's so easy to use, a caveman could do it!

2.) To get started, download the program from here and install it. Finally, open the program. It will look just like this:

3.) Take a quick look at the hot keys:

They are pretty basic, don't you think? Now, look under the Record What section. Will you be recording a rectangular area, one window or your full screen?

After you've decided that, click the To tab.

4.) You can leave the Compressor alone, but under the Video file field, I suggest you select the option of "Ask me every time." Finally, verify that the folder where you want the videos to go is correct.

5.) Next, click the button and the AutoScreenRecorder program will minimize into your taskbar. When you're ready to record your video, just tap the F9 key on your keyboard. Then when you're finished recording, hit the F10 key.

6.) Save the file with the name you would like it to be

7.) Now, you can go back and edit your video by adding captions and animations through the use of Windows Movie Maker. If you're not sure how to use that program, you can find some tips on it right here.

8.) Once you've finished everything, you can go on and enjoy your creation. Then be sure to share it with the world through Web sites like YouTube, for example. That is, if you want to share it!

DoISO

DoISO

DoISO, the free ISO maker (and now CD/DVD burner!) for Windows. (click on thumb for bigger picture)

DoISO is a simple GPL'd, free ISO creation frontend for mkisofs, the ultimate ISO creating utility. One day I wanted to make a DVD-sized ISO but found that my previously trusty ISO utilities would only go to CD size. mkisofs was the only utility available, and it required reading the manual every time I wanted to make a quick ISO, so in reality there was no such thing as making a quick ISO :(. I decided enough was enough, I had to have a reliable GUI for making any size ISO that I wanted, so I went back to some old commandline wrapping code I had used in another project (Mike Mayer's process launch code) and simply wrapped mkisofs.

DoISO was born, and I was happy because I could make quick, easy ISO's :).

And now, as a new important addition to DoISO's features I've added burning support for CD's and DVD's via the Windows 2003 Resource Kit Tools. All this is available with explorer integration!

Enjoy.

PrintFolder 2.21

Have you ever wanted a print-out of all your folders on your PC? We get e-mails here all the time from people asking how they can print a list of their files in a folder. Maybe you need help deciding what should stay and what should go or how about printing an index of a folder to use to keep your backups in order? Well, wait no more, because I have what you've been looking for and it's called PrintFolder 2.21!

This little program, written by programmer Roman A. Pivovarow, will print out a list of your folders for you. It gives you many options as well that will help you get the view that will most benefit your needs. The interface looks basically like Windows Explorer with a hierarchical tree style of folder structure. You select the folder or folders you want to be included (you can even choose parent folders) and you can then configure how deep into the sub-folders the output should display.

There are three different output types you can choose from: HTML, plain text or unformatted plain text. Another cool feature is you can type a name for your root folder, which comes in handy when you're recording data, because you can change the root folder to reflect back on the files and folders that now exist in the following folder. The HTML view is cool as well, because it creates a page with links to your files.

The program is only 420K, so it should download quickly for you and install just as easily. PrintFolder 2.21 is free, but if you want the updates for it, you can register and pay $9.95, but that's up to you! The free version seems to be full featured, but if you find yourself really enjoying this program, show your gratitude by compensating the programmer. Your choice!
